Today was the Cedar City Temple Dedication. I took a whole load of kids with me. I had Emma, Julia, Miles, Austin, and Parker and Jordan Schudde. It was a wonderful meeting, and I loved listening to the talks about the temple.
Greg stayed home with Owen, Lance, and David Schudde. We spent the day watching our friends' children while they were on an anniversary getaway. It was a bit of a challenge to spend an entire Sunday with a whole houseful of rowdy boys, but we made the best of it, and I was happy to help. Of course, my boys were thrilled.
I decided to add to the excitement. We invited the Garners over for dinner. We had so much extra food from Texas Roadhouse, and Greg's holiday party. We had ribs and coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy leftover. I made up a batch of cornbread, and Rachel brought her ambrosia and a vegetable tray. We had such a fun night together. We ate and talked and ended the fun with a game of Jackbox TV. The whole house was wild, there was popcorn everywhere, but our hearts were full. We said goodbye to the Garners, and then I drove the Schudde's back home, where they would meet their Grandma, who was staying for the night. I slowly drove back home, in the dark night, not very anxious to face my kitchen.
To my surprise, Greg and the kids had been busy little beavers. Everyone was wiping, cleaning, washing, and the job was halfway done. I took over the post at the kitchen sink, and together we whipped the house into shape.
I am thankful for a good family. And I'm thankful for good friends. And I'm thankful I can serve with my hands and my heart. At the end of the evening, I had stopped the boys next to my ancestor wall. I made them all look at the picture of my Great Grandma Effie. She had a sister named Goldie. And Goldie's great-great grandchildren are the Schudde children. Here we are, all these years later, connected to one another. My boys like to call each other "Cuzzy" ever since I told them a few years ago that we are related. It is very cute.
When I finally took Lance into his room for bed, he wailed, "Mom! Please be nice to me! Please!" I couldn't help but smile. I tried to calm him down and help him relax for bed. But even though he definitely fights it, I knew he was tired. I was tired, too.
It's been a great day!
