I quietly crawled into bed last night after midnight. Greg hadn't been feeling well, so he turned in early on New Year's Eve. The older kids and I rang in the new year, clinking our glasses of sparkling cider together as we watched the New York City ball drop. We finished the last ten minutes of an episode of Relative Race and then hustled off to bed. Lately, I have found great pleasure in reading until sleepy. So, with Greg lightly snoring next to me, and Owen tucked into his makeshift bed on the floor, I pulled up the covers and started reading with an extremely low light.
I'm deeply into The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. I was dying to get to the end and rest assured that the slave catcher wouldn't snatch Cora one more time. One page after another, in time with Greg's snoring, and I was wide awake. At about 1:00 a.m., Greg stirred. He sat up and noticed my light. He noticed my Kindle. I was caught red handed--reading well after bedtime!! It's such a guilty pleasure! But how could I explain if I stayed up all night?!? So, leaving the poor slaves in peril, I turned off my book and turned off the light. And then proceeded to lay awake for another hour. I pondered on the blessings of my life compared to Cora's life. In my nightly prayer, I asked God to help me make the most of the bounteous blessings He has given to me. I hope to live how He would have me live. And not waste a single ounce of what He has blessed me with. This year, in 2017, I hope I am a blessing to someone, somewhere.
It's been a beautiful day today. The ground was wet when I woke up, but by the late afternoon it was dry and warm. It's been a day of connecting with loved ones and worshipping my Savior at church. And now, the day is far spent. The winter sky has been dark for many hours. The house is quiet. I just might take a few minutes to check on Cora and the other slaves of The Underground Railroad. I may get sleepy...and I may not. But either way,
It's a happy day!
